What is the meaning of a good life?

Jacinda Lumme

What is the meaning of a good life? The answer to this can be subjective to the individual answering it. Based on the definition provided by google a good life is a life of luxury, pleasure, and material comfort. Google also defines a good life to be a way of living that is moral, satisfying, and worthwhile. The term “good life” refers to an individual’s desirable state that consists of the standard of living and the adherence to laws that are ethical and moral.

The manner of which we define a “good life” is different to each person and this could either be that of living an honest, happy and integrity filled life or a wealthy, famous lifestyle. In the case of a good life being linked to wealth, fame and social status, the lifestyle is typically in direct association with money and material belongings. However those with money and material belongings may not always necessarily be living a “good life”.

Is being an entrepreneur the “good life”?

According to inc. entrepreneurs choose the path where they have the ability to create their own lives and narratives for their own lives as opposed to subscribing to someone else’s concept of what they believe to be fun, satisfying or important. Throughout the world, entrepreneurs are amongst the happiest in regards to individual well-being and satisfaction with their working conditions.

Being an entrepreneur can be considered a good life but there is also a price to pay through loneliness. The nature of running a business whilst attempting to nurture and maintain relationships and friendships can be difficult, especially when the individual is running a single-person business. Within the lifestyle of being an entrepreneur there comes a point where an individual can become overworked or breed imposter syndrome whilst working towards their immediate future. Despite this entrepreneurs juxtapose these emotions with their happiness and hedonic well-being. In some cases entrepreneurs compensate and justify their time, resources, emotions and well-being for the self-satisfaction that comes at the end result. In some cases, entrepreneurs perceive their work to be a “calling” where their autonomy is an outlet for expression of their identity and flexibility.

Philosophy

In Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, he elaborates that for most individuals, the most good comes from either an acquisition of wealth, the satisfying of bodily pleasures, or the pursuit of honour. He also states that none of these points though have the ability to serve as the highest good. Aristotle argues that wealth is used to buy other things which inherently means it cannot make an individual happy, that desires are not limited to humans alone, and honour is sought to affect the manner of which other people think of us. Aristotle concludes that highest good should be a commodity that has an aim to maximise the fundamental faculties of man. Therefore qualities of a good life consist of contemplation and learning where intellectual virtues are acquired. To conclude, Aristotle states that the highest good then consists of the procurement of not only intellectual values but also personal values.
