SHOULD WHY BE ASKED MORE THAN ONCE?

In Toyotas model it should and it’s asked five times. Five Times Why is more productive tool than you might think at the first place. It shows how much can be learned from small children who are making their parents mad by arguing why, why, why…

Five Whys core is to tie investments with the prevention of the most problematic things that is happening in producing. (The Lean Startup, 2016) Asking five times why, the real source of the problem, which is often hidden behind more obvious symptoms, can be found. Word to describe the founding is “root cause”. Five Times Why is provable tool that works as well in problems that are seen in everyday life. The Start of Happiness Blog The 5 Whys Template and How You Can Create Sustained Motivation shows in practice how easily Five Whys can be applied to solve any problem in daily basis.

Finding the root cause makes you face the truth behind how you act. That is why it’s powerful way to reflect between the thoughts and the outcome that follows. Here is an example that can be point out probably from everybody’s life:

  1. Why am I late? (I left too late).
  2. Why did I leave too late? (I was as too busy doing all that must be done).
  3. Why I was too busy doing those things? (I had too less time to do those).
  4. Why I didn’t have enough time? (I was planning poorly).
  5. Why did I plan poorly? (I didn’t care enough of being on time).

It’s very important to use Five Whys right way by having learning point of a view in mind. Because the questions are making the whole process transparent, it usually requires courage to face the unpleasant truth. Unfortunately, in teams this technique might turn to “Five Blames” that won’t be productive anymore. That’s why in Lean Startup book it’s advised to always pick a person who is so called “Five Whys Master”. He or she is the person who is in charge of the atmosphere. Five Whys will reveal the bad process behind the bad result, not bad people. (The Lean Startup, 2016)
