What are your social preferences? Are you looking forward to being the focus of the crowd, swaying freely with all kinds of people, or do you prefer to stay in a quiet corner and enjoy the beauty of silence alone? Social is such a big topic. I’m wondering what are our social skills, does it matter? Why do some people see social as a burden and anxiety? Here I have to mention social anxiety disorder.

”Social anxiety disorder is an intense, persistent fear of being watched and judged by others. This fear can affect work, school, and other daily activities. It can even make it hard to make and keep friends. The good news is social anxiety disorder is treatable.”

Some symptoms:

  1. Don’t like to make phone calls, rather spend twice as long writing emails.
  2. Spent a lot of time thinking about what to say before meeting people, but at last, didn’t say anything
  3. Having skills to be invisible on various occasions.
  4. If the other party voluntarily ends the conversation and thinks that you have said something wrong.
  5. Loving home. “I want to go home”,” I finally got home”
  6. Feel that talking to people is completely ”forced by life”.

There was a time my social anxiety started to get serious. For example, I wouldn’t take the initiative to talk to people. For big family or friends gatherings, I basically keep quiet. When I am in the same space with strangers, I get nervous, I don’t want to ask for directions during traveling, I am very resistant to contacting others, I am afraid of being the focus of everyone, and I will feel tired and lose a lot of energy when talking with others. Many times I feel embarrassed and don’t know how to relieve it, and I just want to escape soon as possible from the awkward situation. Until I started to understand it’s not just being an introvert type of person or shy, it’s social anxiety.  I began to read articles and forums related to social anxiety disorders, I found that this anxiety can be gradually alleviated through self-recognition.

The most important thing in relieving social anxiety is to accept yourself and not let the outside voices influence your mind. As an introvert person, don’t compare your behavior and image to being an extrovert. If you don’t want to socialize, ignore it. Everyone’s social style and skills are different, and if a party is a burden for you or makes you feel anxious, you can choose not to go. There is no need to please everyone around you. Finding something that interests you and getting involved with your friends is more valuable.
