Constructive criticism

A skill that will lead you to professional growth is accepting constructive criticism from others. Your colleagues observe how you do certain tasks, how you speak to other colleagues, and how you react to situations. Receiving constructive criticism builds great trust, and is a growing method, of learning, and improvement for both parties.

There is a colossal difference between constructive criticism and destructive criticism. When you are giving constructed criticism, you are giving the feeling of empathy and being respectful and straightforward but not impolite or discourteous. The main point of constructive criticism is to grow professionally and improve into a great version of yourself.

Now, destructive feedback, what is it and how do you handle it? Destructive criticism is the opposite of constructive criticism, it is giving negative feedback with no tips to help improve. It is to make the receiver feel attacked and ridiculed. People give destructive criticism when they are trying to harm you more than help and most of the time there are no good intentions when you are given destructive criticism.

Something here in Proakatemia we have done is had feedback sessions in our team where each person gives feedback to each other. During these feedback sessions, a lot of constructive criticism was given to others and me. At first constructive criticism might make you feel like you are getting destructive criticism, but you need to realize the difference between those two, and during these feedback sessions, I learned the difference.

How to give and take constructive criticism

Constructive criticism is never easy to give or receive. When giving constructive feedback to your colleagues or team members, always be polite and respectful. Never make the situation about “you” make sure your colleague feels supported and encouraged. Remembering to emphasize the positive effort is extremely important when pointing out a few things they could improve or have done better. A big part of constructive feedback is helping to find a solution for any problems that might be in the air. There is always room for improvement though things are going very well. People will feel more motivated to work harder and better when they feel appreciated. This helps colleagues, employees, and team members receive constructive feedback better and take it as an opportunity to grow into a better version of themselves.

To conclude, constructive criticism is nothing but positive for you to grow and become better. Gives you motivation, boosts your productivity and allows personal development.
