


Am I really improving as a leader?

This essay is beneficial for leaders and teammates, especially those who are in their first year. In this essay, I will reflect on my current season as a Business leader of Flip to my past season as a co-Business leader of Flip. In the previous season, I was leading the team with my teammate Ella Muja and we wrote an essay in the autumn of 2021 so 1,5 years ago which I´m going to reflect on and I will see, if have my perceptions changed and if I can I recognize the learnings and improvements I´ve made?

Commitment & Accountability
The first thing I can think of when thinking about leadership is commitment. In 21′ I had my calendar so full that I could not fully commit to my team which caused conflict. I started to forget things more than I usually do, make more mistakes, and got tired more easily. Don´t overload yourself or you will be a useless leader. Accountability is much easier nowadays and I’m more confident in completing my tasks on time. What is causing this? Understanding of the team and well-organized weekly meetings where we share tasks together inside the team. Also, I feel that my ability to delegate has improved, which lessens my workload and lets me focus on the things that are unfinished.
Communication
If you lead with pair use the proper amount of time to create shared roles. When you decide your territory as a leader it´s easier for the team to communicate with the right person. If you lead alone make sure that your team is up to date. I communicate through teams and weekly meetings what is happening. In the weekly meeting, we have a small amount of time for me as a BL to say what I have been up to and what tasks or missions I have for the team so far I have been happy with the way we have been doing it. The weekly meeting is our main channel of communication. I will also have 1 on 1 with the whole team to figure out the goals and needs of my teammates.
Business leading
One of my promises at the time was to bring projects into the team ended the whole time of my leadership season I managed to bring one project to the team. Here was a place for improvement and now at the start of 23,´ I´ve already contacted many different companies and managed to get 2 projects for the team so we can see improvement here. We are a bit struggling with money as Flip and some people have their Hops full which makes my job to motivate people to do work for the team a bit harder.
Strategy
Making a strategy is really important when making business. It´s important to clarify our direction for the team. That way the team knows where the team is heading and it´s easier to stay motivated when you know what purpose you’re doing the work for. I’m not good at making a strategy and I haven’t made a strategy yet maybe because of this essay I will make one. I would see it would be beneficial to make leading and decision-making more efficient.
Feedback skills
Now I have focused on giving feedback not just as a leader but also at the time as I was a teammate. Especially I’ve focused to give positive feedback when someone does something good I try to remember to praise it. Then on the other hand, I try to give feedback and stand my ground if I feel like something isn´t fair. I have improved on giving hard feedback so by this I mean bringing up something painful that I used to avoid for as long as I could.
Overall based on my research and feedback from my teammates and my dear coach Taru I have made improvements. In my opinion, more may be as a person than a leader which then shows in my behavior as a leader.
For the community, I really think that the BL paja has been a really valuable and really important part of my leadership experience. I would highly recommend anybody who is considering being a BL to ask around and talk with people about the role and think about the best possible time for you to be a Business leader or why not a team leader.
